Debden is in Loughton, Essex.

Over the years what is now known as Debden has changed, from a rural landscape dominated by farmland, a few cottages, and Loughton Hall to a bustling modern town.

I have been gathering  information about the history of the Debden Estate for some years. During that time I have collected many people's memories of moving to or growing up on the Debden Estate and I hope to publish an oral history of the estate and a sociology, in due course.

I need more photos of the estate in the 1950s and 1960s. Do you have any I can use?

If you have any photos, newsletters, old newspapers (up to 1960) and so on, please let me know. I would really like to see them - or I can give them a good home  if you no longer need them, so please search your boxes, under your beds and in your lofts and see what you can find hidden away.

Were you interviewed by Peter Willmott or Mike Young in the 1950s? If so, please let me know.

Email your memories and copies of your photos to sue@debdenhistory.vpweb.co.uk and if you no longer want your photos, I would be happy to take them off your hands.

I cannot promise to include everybody's contribution because the size of this website is limited, but I may use your memories in an article or in my forthcoming oral history book, as long as that is OK with you.

If you do not want me to publish your memories please let me know and I will respect your wishes.

Every memory enables me to learn a little bit more about life fifty or sixty years ago. I am indebted to everyone who has sent contributions to the Debden Memory Bank. Thank you for supporting my research.

You might wish to write about one or more of these categories:

  1. Moving to Debden
  2. What was your house, flat, prefab like?
  3. Debden in the 1950s
  4. School
  5. Clubs and recreation
  6. Play time in the street and forest.
  7. What did mum do during the day?
  8. Memories of the Broadway and Loughton Hall
  9. What did you do with dad?
  10. Shops, door to door sellers and market stalls.
  11. Public transport
  12. Bank of England
  13. Factories and other places to work
  14. Keeping in contact with family living elsewhere.
  15. Anything else that you feel is important in a history of Debden
  16. Grange Farm, and especially the swimming pool. Did you jump off of the scary diving board?

So, it is over to you. Please do write or join in the debate on the Debden History Facebook page.

It is important to record life as it once was before it entirely disappears.

Best Wishes,
Sue
